KEEP HYDRATED FOR HAPPY HEALTH EYES

This post is sponsored by IRIS, however, all opinions are my own.

We all know that drinking enough water is important for the body. Getting those 8 - 10 glasses of water a day helps to prevent dehydration and is great for your overall health, but did you know it can affect your eyes too?

Drink Up

To keep your eyes functioning normally you’ll want to drink plenty of water each day. Tears do more than just show up when you cry. They help wash away bacteria and debris and prevent eye infections. Your eyes need adequate water to perform tasks as simple as blinking.

Keep an Eye on the Signs

Dehydration is easiest to recognize when you pay attention to the physical signs. Do your eyes feel dry or scratchy? Are your eyes red or your vision blurry? The inability to produce tears like usual is a dead giveaway that you are dehydrated. It is easy to reverse mild to moderate dehydration by replenishing the body with water, but severe dehydration may require medical care. Fatigue, headaches, dizziness, constipation and dry skin are all signs you’ll want to watch out for. Wearing contact lenses can be the problem, but dry eyes can also be blamed on medications, windy climates, and certain diseases.

Tips to Stay Hydrated

  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day and no that large cup of coffee doesn’t count

  • Use a humidifier in your home, especially if you live in a dry climate

  • Avoid smoke that will dry out your eyes

  • Heat hinders eye moisture so turn that thermostat down

  • Purchase some rehydrating drops or artificial tears without preservatives

  • Take a break from the computer screen and other devices and remember to blink

  • Don’t forget to wear your sunglasses outdoors
