Hey Guys! Kai here from Generation Kai! Now that we are back to school, I wanted to take some time to give you some tips for healthy snack ideas.
I don’t know about you but when I get home from school I am starving. Here are the top five snacks I love to eat when I open the refrigerator or pantry at home:
Organic blue corn chips and Drew’s salsa– this is my number one favorite snack.
Spelt pretzels and avocado– this is my nine year old sister’s favorite after school snack. My mom just cuts the avocado in half, takes out the pit and my sister dips away.
Veggie tray with hummus– you know those veggie trays you can buy to have at parties? My mom keeps the tray and fills it each week with baby carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, small sweet peppers and celery and in the middle she puts a container of hummus. When we get home from school we bust that thing open and dig in. She mixes up the hummus flavor each week to keep it exciting!
Celery and almond butter with raisins– when my Mom was growing up she called this snack ants on a log. You put the almond butter or sunflower butter in the celery and then place the raisins on top – it’s delicious! If you don’t have time to make it perfectly you can always just clean a celery stalk and then dip it in the almond butter.
A fresh fruit also makes for a great after school snack. My mom always keeps around the kitchen bananas, apples, strawberries, cuties (oranges), grapes, blueberries, mangos, etc. My favorite are Fuji apples and my second favorite are green grapes.
It’s important to mix up your snacks during the week. That goes for all foods actually. Every fruit and every veggie has its own vitamin and mineral make-up so if you just eat strawberries all the time you only get the vitamins and minerals from strawberries. If you mix up your diet and eat all different things throughout the week you are sure to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to be healthy.
