TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY
I am Lindsay, and I am the owner (and tipi maker) behind Modern Tipi. I am a wife to a super supportive husband (and tipi assistant), Chris, and a Mom to two adorable (yet crazy) little ones- Grady is 3.5 and Addison is 1.5.
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
I design and create children’s tipis. I started this business after making one for my son. I wanted a cool “fort” for him, that didn’t look like a circus tent or a pile of blankets and pillows! I (selfishly) wanted it to “go” with the modern decor in my home. I have always enjoyed sewing, so i just figured, “I can make this!”. After ironing out many kinks, I came up with a successful pattern and the business slowly grew from there. I was still working at the time of my first creation, so it was a VERY part time thing for well over a year. Once I had my daughter, I decided that if it could make it a "real" full time job, I would not go back to work, and I would make Modern Tipi my full time gig! Well- here we are, and things are crazy busy and I am loving every minute of it!
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT WITH YOUR BUSINESS?
Hmm…. When I see photos of little ones LOVING their tipi or comments on how happy people are with the product, I feel VERY proud. I put my heart into every tipi, so feedback is SO appreciated.
HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED AND INSPIRED?
Sometimes when you have TWO full time jobs- Tipi Maker AND Mom, it can be hard to find that balance and feel motivated when your kids are BUSY BUSY BUSY. While they often leave me exhausted, they also inspire me to give it my all. Modern Tipi is my job and my passion, and I love what I do- that helps with the motivation!
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
As I said, it is hard! I use nap time to my full advantage, as I don’t want to sew ALL NIGHT LONG and never see my husband. Those babies hit the sheets in the afternoon and I hit the sewing machine!
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOM MOMENT?
I have two pretty amazing kiddos (don’t all Mom’s say that!), but they are VERY different. My son is sensitive and kind, and my daughter is happy, yet wild! They always make me proud, but when people go out of their way to share their praises about them, I cannot help but feel extremely proud- after all, I did make those great kids, and I hope that they follow my husband and my lead.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST PARENTING ADVICE?
I don’t have great advice- I do what works. BUT, that being said, DO NOT GOOGLE ANYTHING! Chat with your girlfriends, don’t hold things in. Talk about your parenting stresses! You will realize that you are not the only one feeling that way!
